Money and the Corruption of the American Dream

The idea of the American Dream is rooted in the second sentence of the Declaration of Independence which states that "all men are created equal" and that they are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights" including "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Unfortunately for many people happiness and money are synonyms and they think America will give it to them.

Jay Gatsby had enormous sums of many, luxurious mansion and cars. But did he get his happiness? No, the only thing he got in the end was a bullet. Money can’t provide anybody with happiness but money can be a good means to reach happiness. It is only an instrument, a bridge which can help to cross the river of difficulties. If a person’s dream is to travel to the lands he was reading about in his childhood, money can be helpful. But even money can’t solve all the problems. To my mind people save up thousands and millions of dollars because of the fear. They are afraid of the future. Will they be able to pay for the house, medicine insurance and send their children to college? The whole financial system is based on human’s fear.

Why do people buy mansions, luxurious cars, designer’s clothes, watches for 10000$? The answer is “to impress”, to impress other people. “Look at me, I’m so rich, my business is so prosperous”, they think. I suppose that such people are corrupted by the craving for approval. They do their best only in order to get the approval of the society.

The other problem is that the majority of people don’t understand the way money work . It is not taught at schools. There is a simple principle, poor and middle class work for money, money work for rich. Besides, only 5% of money exists in reality, the other 95% are virtual. If people understand the real value of money it will be the end of the era of money. Immigrants all over the world come to the USA and hope for luck. At the same time they don’t understand what “assets and liabilities” are. Even if they get money from lotteries or inheritance, they will use their money unwise. There are many stories of people who used to have millions, like Mike Tyson, and then became poor again. Now they accuse their accountants, friends, brokers, everybody except of themselves.

But people such as Jay Gatsby want something more, they thirst for real happiness, the real American dream. In his case he wanted love and in the text there are no any facts showing that he was mercenary. He understood much in finances, it is likely that Dan Cody, his mentor, taught him everything. Gatsby was not corrupted, and being rich and free from vanity at the same time was a part of his charisma.
In conclusion I’d like to say that money shouldn’t shadow the way to the real happiness. Although Americans today are not so enthusiastic about such stories, the image of the entrepreneur who “makes it on his own” still continues to inspire those who seek fortune on the American land. The image of a poor boy who rose “from rags to riches” will be everlasting for people whose goal is to be rich.
